The Best Shopify Review Apps

Reviews are the cheapest conversion lever most stores have, and the app you pick decides whether you get photo reviews, whether stars can appear in Google, and whether you can ever leave.

THE SHORT VERSION

We install a review app on essentially every store we build, so this list is not a survey of the app store — it is the shortlist we choose from, and the reasons we pick one over another for a given client. The honest headline: for most stores the difference between these apps matters far less than getting the widget placement and the review-request timing right, which is why we wrote a full Judge.me setup guide.

What we judged on

The criteria below are the ones that actually change the outcome on a client store. Everything else is a feature list.

Photo and video reviews

Text reviews are table stakes. Visual reviews are what actually move the needle in beauty, fashion, and home — so a usable photo flow is the first filter.

Clean structured data

The app has to emit valid product review markup without colliding with what your theme already outputs. Duplicate review schema is the most common reason star snippets never appear.

Request automation you can time

The ability to delay the review request to your real delivery window, not a US-domestic default.

Export and portability

Reviews you cannot export are reviews you have rented. Every app here lets you take them with you.

Cost at your review volume

Pricing that scales with orders or review volume can change the calculus significantly as you grow.

The picks

Judge.me

Our default pick

The app we install most often, for a straightforward reason: the free tier is genuinely usable rather than a trial in disguise, it emits clean review structured data, and the automated request flow is easy to time to a real delivery window. It is the review app on most of our recent Shopify builds, and the one we recommend when a client has no strong existing preference.

What is good

  • Unlimited review requests on the free plan
  • Photo and video reviews without a premium tier
  • Clean product review structured data
  • Straightforward CSV import and export
  • Translates well for bilingual EN/AR stores

What to watch

  • Default widget placement needs moving to earn its keep
  • The most polished layouts and Q&A sit on paid tiers
  • Design customisation is limited without CSS

Pricing: Free tier that most launching stores can live on; paid tiers add Q&A, custom forms and the carousel.

Loox

Best for visual-first brands

Loox appears in our beauty and fashion proposals alongside Judge.me, and it earns that place on presentation — the photo-review galleries and pop-up widgets look better out of the box than anything else here. The trade-off is that it has no free tier, so on a store with low order volume the monthly cost arrives before the reviews do.

What is good

  • Best-looking photo review galleries of the shortlist
  • Strong review-request flow with photo incentives
  • Referral features bundled in on higher tiers

What to watch

  • No free plan
  • Pricing tied to order volume
  • Less flexible on structured data control than Judge.me

Pricing: Paid from the first plan, with tiers stepped by monthly order volume.

Shopify Product Reviews (native)

Only as a stopgap

Shopify's own review functionality is free and does the minimum: text reviews, on the product page, with no request automation and no photo support. We mention it because clients ask, and the honest answer is that it collects almost no reviews — without an automated request, most stores gather a handful and conclude reviews do not work for them. Treat it as a placeholder, not a decision.

What is good

  • Free
  • No third-party script weight
  • Nothing to migrate later if you never use it

What to watch

  • No automated review requests, which is the whole game
  • No photo or video reviews
  • Minimal styling control

Pricing: Free.

Our verdict

If you want one answer: install Judge.me, move the star rating under the product title, and set the request to fire after delivery. That combination does more than switching apps ever will.

Not sure which of these you actually need?

Send us your store. We will tell you which apps are earning their subscription, which are costing you page speed, and what we would install instead — free, no strings.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What clients ask before they commit to an app in this category.

Which review app is best for getting stars in Google?

All of these can emit valid review structured data. What stops stars appearing is almost never the app — it is duplicate review markup from a theme or SEO app fighting the review app. Fix the duplication and the app choice becomes secondary. Our Judge.me setup guide covers the check.

Can I move reviews between apps later?

Yes, by CSV, and we do it on most migrations. Export before you cancel anything — reviews are the one asset a store cannot regenerate.

How many reviews does a product need?

There is no threshold number worth quoting. What consistently matters more is having some reviews with photos on your bestsellers, rather than a uniform handful everywhere.

Can you set this up for us?

Yes — review setup is standard scope on our builds. Start with a store audit and we will tell you what is worth changing first.
