App blocks, not theme file edits
App blocks survive theme updates. Injected code does not.
Best apps / Theme & design
Every store eventually needs a section its theme does not have. The real question is whether you rent it, build it, or decide you did not need it.
THE SHORT VERSION
We build custom Shopify themes for a living, so treat this list as coming from a particular point of view — and that point of view is not "never use an app". Section apps are genuinely useful for merchandising blocks your team wants to move around and might remove. Where they stop being the right answer is anything core to how your store sells, where you need control of the markup and the performance budget. The honest framing is a spectrum, and the deciding factor is usually page speed.
The criteria below are the ones that actually change the outcome on a client store. Everything else is a feature list.
App blocks survive theme updates. Injected code does not.
Every block adds requests. On a product or collection page that is measured in conversion, not milliseconds.
Typography, colour, radius, and spacing need to match your theme, or the section reads as bolted on.
Most traffic is mobile; bilingual stores also need it correct in Arabic.
You should be able to take it out without leaving orphaned markup behind.
DECO adds sections, product decorators, and badges as installable blocks you place through the theme editor. Its real value is not any individual section — it is that they live outside your theme files, so a theme update does not silently undo them and a merchandiser can place them without booking developer time. Used sparingly, it fills the gaps in a 2.0 theme neatly.
When a section is central to how your store sells — the product page layout, the way variants are chosen, the comparison block that closes the sale — building it into the theme is the better answer. You control the markup, the structured data, and the performance budget, and there is no monthly fee or third-party script in the critical rendering path. This is what our custom development work is, and it is why the stores we build tend to load faster than the ones we audit.
Our verdict
Use DECO for merchandising blocks you want to move around and might remove. Build it into the theme when it is core to how the store sells — and measure page speed after every addition either way.
Send us your store. We will tell you which apps are earning their subscription, which are costing you page speed, and what we would install instead — free, no strings.
What clients ask before they commit to an app in this category.
Each one adds weight. A couple of well-configured sections is fine; a page assembled entirely from app blocks will be measurably slower, and speed is a conversion factor, not just a score.
Page builders are good for marketing landing pages that change often. For product and collection templates, where speed and structured data matter most, custom theme code wins.
App blocks are far more resilient than edited theme files, but re-check placement after any major theme update.
