The Real Cost of E-commerce Software in 2026: Shopify vs. Custom Builds

Every founder asks us the same question, and the honest answer annoys half of them: in 2026, the real cost of e-commerce software is not the license fee. It is everything attached to it — the build, the maintenance tax, the time you spend not selling. We priced both paths, Shopify and a custom build, with real numbers. Here is where the money actually goes.

What E-commerce Software Actually Costs in 2026

Path 1: Shopify

  • Platform: $39–$399/month (Basic to Advanced), $2,500+/month for Shopify Plus at enterprise scale.
  • Professional build: $5,000–$30,000 for a custom-designed theme done properly by an agency. A stock theme launch costs a few hundred dollars.
  • Time to launch: 4–8 weeks for a full custom build. Days on a stock theme.
  • Hosting, security, PCI compliance, checkout infrastructure: $0. Included. This line item alone kills most custom-build spreadsheets.

Path 2: Custom Build

  • Initial build: $50,000–$250,000 for a serious storefront with cart, checkout, payments, admin, and inventory. Anyone quoting $15,000 is quoting a prototype.
  • Time to launch: 6–12 months. Every one of those months has a payroll.
  • Hosting and DevOps: $500–$5,000/month for infrastructure someone must monitor at 3 a.m.
  • PCI compliance: Yours to build, audit, and re-certify. Annually.

The Maintenance Tax Nobody Puts in the Quote

Custom software does not stay built. Industry rule of thumb: plan on 15–20% of the original build cost, every year, just to keep the lights on — security patches, dependency upgrades, browser changes, the payment API that deprecates on a Tuesday. On a $150,000 build, that is $22,500–$30,000 a year before you ship a single new feature.

A custom store is not a purchase. It is a subscription where you are also the vendor.

On Shopify, that tax is what your monthly fee buys: the platform absorbs upgrades, security, and scaling for you and roughly two million other merchants. Your maintenance budget goes to growth work instead — which is the difference we unpacked in why ambitious brands hire a Shopify agency.

The Five-Year Totals

  • Shopify (Advanced plan + $20K agency build + apps): roughly $60,000–$80,000 over five years.
  • Custom ($150K build + 18% annual maintenance + infra): roughly $400,000–$500,000 over five years.

That is a 5–6x gap — before counting the 6–12 months of revenue you did not earn while the custom build was in progress.

When Custom Actually Wins

We build software for a living, so believe us when we say: sometimes custom is right. It wins when the software is the business, not the checkout in front of it:

  • Your selling model does not exist in any platform — multi-sided marketplaces, complex B2B contract pricing, regulated industries with bespoke compliance flows.
  • Platform fees exceed engineering payroll. At very high volume, transaction economics can genuinely flip — do that math with a spreadsheet, not a feeling.
  • The differentiation lives in the software itself, and off-the-shelf would erase your moat. The same logic applies when a store outgrows the browser — that is when we talk about a dedicated mobile app.

If you do not clearly recognize your business in that list, you are not the exception. Exceptions know.

Do This Today

Price your own project against real numbers instead of vendor decks: our free Project Cost Estimator takes two minutes and covers both paths. If Shopify is the answer — and for most brands under $20M it is — start your Shopify free trial today and validate before you commit a dollar to design.

Then, when you are ready to build it properly, see how QodeBites builds stores that earn back their cost instead of becoming one.
