How to Set Up Bold Upsell and Cross-Sell on Shopify

Pre-purchase upsells are harder than post-purchase ones, because every offer you show is competing with the sale you already had. Placement is the whole game.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Bold Upsell handles the offers that happen before checkout — the larger size on the product page, the complementary item in the cart drawer, the bundle that turns one item into three. Done well, it is one of the most reliable ways to lift average order value on traffic you have already paid for. Done badly, it is a modal that stands between a ready buyer and the buy button. Everything below is about the difference. Model the upside in the AOV calculator.

Before you start

  • A Shopify store
  • Products that genuinely pair or upgrade
  • Your margin by product

Step by step

The same sequence we follow on client stores. Do them in order — several of the later steps depend on decisions made in the earlier ones.

  1. Install and map your pairs first

Before touching the app, write down which products genuinely upgrade or complement each other. Most weak upsells are weak because the pairing was picked by price, not by whether a real customer would want both.

  2. Set up product-page upgrade offers

Offer the larger size, the bundle, or the premium version inline on the product page — not as a popup. An inline upgrade block reads as a choice; a modal reads as an obstacle.

  3. Add cart-drawer cross-sells

Put one or two complementary items in the slide-out cart, under the line items and above the checkout button. This is the highest-intent moment you get before checkout, and the shopper has already decided to buy something.

  4. Pair it with a free-shipping progress bar

A cross-sell plus "you are $12 from free shipping" is far stronger than either alone, because it gives the add-on a reason. Set the threshold with the free-shipping threshold calculator so it stays profitable.

  5. Cap it at one offer per stage

One upgrade on the product page, one or two cross-sells in the cart. Beyond that, conversion on the original item starts to fall and you have traded a certain sale for a possible one.

  6. Never block the buy button

No interstitial between add-to-cart and checkout. If a shopper is trying to pay, let them pay — the post-purchase page is where the extra ask belongs. See the ReConvert guide.

  7. Check it on a real phone

Most of your traffic is mobile, and upsell blocks are where mobile layouts break — offers that push the add-to-cart button below the fold, or a cart drawer you cannot scroll past. Test on a device.

  8. Measure AOV and conversion together

An upsell that lifts average order value while dropping conversion rate can be a net loss. Watch both numbers side by side, and give it enough volume to mean something.

What we do differently

The three things that separate a working setup from a default one — drawn from the stores we ship, not from the documentation.

Inline beats modal

Every popup between a shopper and the buy button is a tax on your conversion rate.

Give the add-on a reason

Free-shipping progress turns a cross-sell from a pitch into a solution.

Watch conversion, not just AOV

The two move in opposite directions when you overreach.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What clients ask us about this integration before we set it up.

Where should the first upsell go?

The cart drawer, almost always. It is high intent, low friction, and it does not compete with the product-page decision the shopper is still making.

Do upsells hurt conversion rate?

They can, if they interrupt. Inline, relevant, and capped at one per stage, the effect on conversion is usually negligible while AOV rises. Measure both.

Bundles or upsells?

Bundles work better when the products are genuinely bought together (a routine, an outfit); upsells work better for upgrades. Most catalogues want some of each.
