How to Connect Klaviyo to Shopify (and the 5 Flows That Matter)

Klaviyo is on the technology stack of nearly every Shopify proposal we write. Connecting it takes ten minutes; configuring it so it actually recovers revenue takes an afternoon. This is that afternoon.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Email and WhatsApp are the only channels where you own the audience. Klaviyo earns its place because it reads Shopify's data model natively — products, orders, refunds, and browse behaviour all land as usable triggers rather than as a flat contact list. What separates a store that makes real money from Klaviyo from one that has "set it up" is not the integration, it is the five flows below, and whether the abandoned-cart timing was ever tuned. Work out what recovering those carts is worth with the AOV and LTV calculators.

Before you start

  • A Shopify store
  • A Klaviyo account
  • Your sender domain DNS access
  • Your real average delivery time

Step by step

The same sequence we follow on client stores. Do them in order — several of the later steps depend on decisions made in the earlier ones.

  1. Install and connect the Shopify integration

Add Klaviyo from the Shopify App Store and connect the store. On first sync Klaviyo backfills your historical orders and customers, which is what makes segmentation useful on day one — do not skip it and do not start building flows until the backfill finishes.

  2. Turn on on-site tracking

Enable the on-site JavaScript so Klaviyo can record Viewed Product and Added to Cart events. Without it, browse abandonment and most useful segments simply cannot fire. Confirm it is live by browsing a product in an incognito window and watching the event appear on your own profile.

  3. Authenticate your sending domain

Set up a dedicated sending domain with the DKIM and CNAME records Klaviyo gives you. Sending from a shared domain is the fastest way to land in Promotions or spam. This is DNS work — allow for propagation before you send anything real.

  4. Get consent right before you collect anything

Configure your signup forms to capture explicit email (and SMS/WhatsApp) consent, and keep the consent timestamp. If you sell into Europe this is not optional, and retrofitting consent onto a list you already built is painful.

  5. Build the welcome series

Three emails triggered on list join: the discount you promised, the brand story and bestsellers, then a soft nudge with social proof. This flow greets people at peak interest and routinely outperforms every campaign you will send.

  6. Build the abandoned-cart flow — and tune the delay

Three emails: a short nudge within an hour or two, a reminder the next day with reviews on the abandoned product, and a final message with a modest incentive. The first delay is the setting that matters most; too fast reads as surveillance, too slow and the intent is gone.

  7. Add browse abandonment

Trigger on Viewed Product without an Added to Cart. Keep it gentle and helpful — this shopper is earlier in the decision than a cart abandoner, so lead with information, not urgency or discounts.

  8. Add post-purchase and replenishment

After delivery, send care or usage content, then a review request (this is where Klaviyo and Judge.me overlap — pick one owner so customers are not asked twice). For consumables, add a replenishment reminder timed to how long the product actually lasts.

  9. Add a win-back and then leave it alone

Trigger at roughly twice your typical repurchase interval. Then resist the urge to keep editing: give every flow enough volume to judge before you change it, or you will be reading noise.

What we do differently

The three things that separate a working setup from a default one — drawn from the stores we ship, not from the documentation.

Backfill before you build

Flows built on an empty account look fine and segment terribly. Let the historical sync finish first.

One owner for review requests

Klaviyo and your review app will both happily email customers asking for a review. Decide which one owns it.

Tie replenishment to reality

A 30-day reminder on a product that lasts 90 days trains people to ignore you. Use the real usage cycle.

Would rather we just did it?

We set this up on every store we build, and we do it as standalone work too. Start with a free audit — we will tell you what is worth changing before you spend anything.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What clients ask us about this integration before we set it up.

Klaviyo or Shopify Email?

Shopify Email is fine for occasional campaigns on a small store. The moment you want conditional flows, real segmentation, or browse abandonment, Klaviyo is a different class of tool — and the cost only becomes meaningful as your list grows.

How much revenue should flows produce?

We will not quote you a number, because it depends entirely on traffic, margin, and category — anyone who quotes a universal percentage is selling something. Measure your own baseline first, then judge the flows against it.

Do I need SMS or WhatsApp too?

In Egypt and the wider MENA region, WhatsApp open rates make it hard to ignore. We usually run email as the workhorse and WhatsApp for time-critical moments like cart recovery and order updates — see the WhatsApp integration guide.
