Approve, do not auto-accept
An application form filters out the coupon-site traffic that will claim credit for sales you already had.
Integrations / Affiliate & referral
An affiliate program is the only acquisition channel where you pay strictly for results. It is also the one most likely to be quietly gamed if you set it up without rules.
WHY THIS MATTERS
For brands with an engaged community — and for anyone already working with creators informally — a structured affiliate program turns ad-hoc discount codes into a channel you can actually measure. UpPromote is the app we deploy for this: it handles affiliate registration, tracking links, coupon-based attribution, commission tiers, and payouts. The decisions that matter are commission rate, attribution window, and who you let in. Set the rate against your profit margin, not against what competitors advertise.
The same sequence we follow on client stores. Do them in order — several of the later steps depend on decisions made in the earlier ones.
Work out what you can pay per sale after cost of goods, shipping, and payment fees — then decide the rate. Copying a competitor's percentage without knowing their margin is how programs end up unprofitable at scale.
Install the app and set up the affiliate signup page with your brand, your terms, and a short application form. Requiring an application rather than instant approval is the single best filter you have.
Set the cookie window and decide what happens when an affiliate link and a coupon code both apply. Ambiguous attribution is where disputes come from, and disputes with creators are expensive in a way commission is not.
Tracking links work on desktop; coupon codes are what actually gets used in an Instagram story or a WhatsApp group. Issue both, mapped to the same affiliate, so you capture the sale either way.
Prevent affiliates earning on their own orders, and decide whether affiliate coupons stack with sitewide promotions. Left open, both get exploited within weeks — not maliciously, just because the rules allow it.
A higher rate above a monthly sales threshold rewards your genuine advocates rather than paying the same rate to someone who posted once. This is where a program stops being a discount scheme.
Product images, approved copy, and a short do-and-do-not list. Affiliates left to write their own claims will eventually write one you cannot stand behind.
Pay on a fixed cadence, after a hold that covers your return window. Paying commission on orders that later get refunded is a slow, avoidable leak.
The three things that separate a working setup from a default one — drawn from the stores we ship, not from the documentation.

Otherwise you pay commission on refunded orders.
Codes are what creators actually share. Links are what desktop buyers click. You want both.

We set this up on every store we build, and we do it as standalone work too. Start with a free audit — we will tell you what is worth changing before you spend anything.
What clients ask us about this integration before we set it up.
Affiliates are paid on results, influencers are usually paid up front for reach. UpPromote handles the first cleanly and can track the second if you give each creator a code — which is a good reason to run both through one system.
It varies enormously by category and margin, so a number quoted in the abstract is not useful. The one rule that holds: it has to survive your gross margin after shipping and payment fees.
Some will — that is what the approval step, the self-referral block, and coupon-stacking rules are for. A program without rules pays for traffic you already owned.
