How to Connect WhatsApp to Shopify for Orders and Cart Recovery

In Egypt and across MENA, WhatsApp is not a "nice to have" channel — for a lot of customers it is the only channel. Here is how we wire it into Shopify without breaking page speed or messaging rules.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Email open rates in this region do not compare to WhatsApp, and customers frequently expect to confirm an order or ask about a size over chat rather than through a form. The two things that go wrong are predictable: stores install a chat widget that loads a heavy third-party script on every page and quietly damages Core Web Vitals, and stores start broadcasting to customers who never opted in. Both are avoidable. Our own Shopify app, SnipNotes, handles the order-confirmation side of this from inside the Shopify admin.

Before you start

  • A business phone number for WhatsApp Business
  • A Shopify store
  • Checkout marketing-consent enabled

Step by step

The same sequence we follow on client stores. Do them in order — several of the later steps depend on decisions made in the earlier ones.

  1. Set up WhatsApp Business properly

Use a dedicated business number, not a personal one, and complete the business profile — name, description, address, hours, and catalogue link. This is what customers see before they decide whether you are legitimate.

  2. Install a WhatsApp app for Shopify

Install an app that connects your store's order and checkout events to WhatsApp. Approve the scopes and connect the number you just set up. Confirm it can see orders before you configure any automation.

  3. Add the chat button — lazily

Place the floating chat button so it does not cover the sticky add-to-cart bar on mobile, and make sure the widget script loads lazily or on interaction. A chat button that blocks rendering costs you more conversions than it recovers.

  4. Turn on order confirmations

Send a confirmation on order placement and an update on fulfilment. In cash-on-delivery markets this measurably reduces failed deliveries, because customers actually read it and can flag a wrong address before the courier is dispatched.

  5. Set up abandoned-cart recovery

One message, roughly an hour after abandonment, with the product image and a direct checkout link. One. WhatsApp is an intimate channel and the tolerance for repeated marketing is far lower than in email — a second and third chase gets you blocked, not converted.

  6. Collect opt-in at checkout

Use Shopify's checkout marketing consent to capture WhatsApp opt-in, and keep the record. Broadcasting to non-consenting numbers risks your number being reported and restricted, which is not a recoverable position.

  7. Route conversations to a real person

Decide who answers, in what hours, and what the fallback message is outside them. An unanswered WhatsApp is worse than no WhatsApp button, because the customer has now been ignored personally.

  8. Test the whole loop

Place a real test order, abandon a real test cart, and read every message on a phone. Check the checkout link opens the right cart, and check the Arabic version if you are bilingual.

What we do differently

The three things that separate a working setup from a default one — drawn from the stores we ship, not from the documentation.

Lazy-load the widget

Chat widgets are one of the most common causes of a slow Largest Contentful Paint on otherwise fast Shopify themes.

One cart message, not three

The channel punishes repetition. A single well-timed message with the product image outperforms a sequence.

Confirmations reduce COD failures

If you ship cash-on-delivery, the confirmation message is an operational tool, not a marketing one.

Would rather we just did it?

We set this up on every store we build, and we do it as standalone work too. Start with a free audit — we will tell you what is worth changing before you spend anything.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What clients ask us about this integration before we set it up.

Will a WhatsApp widget slow my store down?

It can, badly, if it loads eagerly on every page. Load it on interaction or after first paint and the cost is negligible. This is one of the first things we check in a store audit.

Can I broadcast promotions on WhatsApp?

Only to customers who opted in, and sparingly. WhatsApp is much less tolerant of marketing volume than email, and the penalty for getting it wrong is your number being restricted.

Do I still need email if I have WhatsApp?

Yes. Use WhatsApp for time-critical, high-intent moments and email for everything that needs length, images, or a record. See the Klaviyo guide.

What does SnipNotes do here?

SnipNotes is our own Shopify app — it handles WhatsApp order confirmations plus one-click order notes and a snippet library for your support team, from inside the Shopify admin. Details on the SnipNotes page.
