Shopify Migration Cost: What Replatforming Really Costs

A migration is two projects wearing one name: moving the data, and rebuilding the storefront. Quotes that only price the second are the reason migrations go over budget.

STRAIGHT ANSWER

We run migrations off WooCommerce, Magento, Wix, and BigCommerce regularly, and the pattern is consistent — the storefront rebuild is predictable, and the data is where the variance lives. Below is how we price both, plus the line item that gets skipped most often and costs the most when it goes wrong: the URL-level redirect map. If you skip that, you do not lose a bit of traffic; you lose the search rankings you spent years earning.

The ranges

These are the numbers we quote, not illustrative examples. They are the starting ranges by scope — the estimator further down this page takes the same figures and adjusts them for design level, features, and timeline.

Scope Cost Timeline What that covers
Storefront rebuild $8,000 – $20,000 6 – 12 weeks Same as a new custom store — design, theme development, product setup, apps, payments, shipping. The migration does not make this part cheaper.
Data migration add-on quoted by volume 1 – 3 weeks Customers with a password-reset flow, order history, reviews into your new review app, and blog content with internal links rewritten. Priced against record counts, not a flat fee.
Redirect mapping & SEO preservation included runs alongside A URL-level 301 map for every existing URL, meta preservation, sitemap resubmission, and 30 days of organic traffic monitoring after launch. We do not treat this as optional.
Migration-only engagement from $2,500 2 – 4 weeks For brands keeping a stock theme who only need the data and redirects moved correctly. Rare, but we do it.

On the floor: The floor is the same $2,500 as any engagement. But be wary of a migration quoted materially below that: the corners that get cut are almost always redirects and order history, and both are expensive to fix afterwards.

What moves the price

Where a project lands inside those ranges is decided by a handful of things. These are them, in roughly the order they matter.

Record volume

Ten thousand orders and fifty thousand customers is a different job from five hundred and two thousand. Data migration scales with rows, which is why it is quoted separately.

Data cleanliness

A well-structured Magento catalogue maps cleanly. A WooCommerce store with eight years of plugin-generated custom fields needs mapping work before anything moves.

URL structure difference

The bigger the gap between your old URL patterns and Shopify's, the larger the redirect map. This is mechanical work, and it is not optional.

Reviews and UGC

Reviews are the one asset you cannot regenerate. Moving them into Judge.me or another app is a specific line item worth insisting on.

Custom functionality

Anything your old platform did through a plugin needs a Shopify equivalent — app, theme code, or a decision to drop it. This is where scope grows quietly.

Subscriptions and recurring orders

Migrating active subscriptions is genuinely hard and sometimes requires customers to re-authorise. Establish this early, not at launch.

The part most pricing pages leave out

Where migrations actually go wrong: nobody owns the redirect map, so it gets done in a rush the week of launch and misses the long tail — which is where most of your organic traffic lives. Ask any migration quote whether redirects are included and who builds the map. If the answer is vague, that is your risk showing. Our free Shopify migration checklist is the same one we work from, so you can check any agency's plan against it, including ours.

Frequently Asked
Questions

The questions we get asked on every pricing call.

Will I lose SEO traffic when I migrate?

You will see movement in the first weeks — that is normal and it settles. What causes permanent loss is missing redirects, not the migration itself. A complete URL-level map is the difference, and it is why we include it rather than pricing it as an extra.

Can my order history come across?

Yes. Order history, customers, products, reviews, and blog content all migrate. Customers need a password reset on first login for security reasons — we handle that with a launch email so it is not a surprise.

How long does a migration take?

Six to twelve weeks for a full rebuild plus migration, with the data work running alongside the storefront build rather than after it.

Which platforms do you migrate from?

Most commonly WooCommerce to Shopify and Magento to Shopify, plus Wix and BigCommerce. Each has its own page with the specifics of what moves and what does not.
